The city at night doesn’t sleep…it plots.
Every corner has eyes, every shadow holds ears.
I cut different through Sunset quiet.
The key in my pocket felt different out here.
Felt like it knew where it was going.
5th and Dorado.
The shop sat between a pawn shop and a deli that had never given up.
No name on the door. No hours posted.
Just a red bulb in the window that said enough to the right people.
I knocked twice.
Paused.
Once more.
Old rhythm…
Old debt.
A shuffle inside.
Bolts turning one by one.
The door opened just enough.
A face in the gap.
Eyes tired.
Skin that hadn’t heard about daylight.
The kind of man who chose the dark a long time ago and never went back.
“Ten,” he said. Gravel in every syllable. “Didn’t think I’d see you again.”
“You didn’t. But I need your hands.”
Inside smelled of iron and old decisions.
Keys lined every wall.
Every shape. Every size.
Some of them too old to belong to this century.
I set mine on the counter.
He stared at it.
For the first time in a long time I watched a craftsman hesitate.
“Where did you get this?”
“Question is, what does it open?”
He didn’t answer straight away.
Calloused fingers traced the grooves first.
A craftsman reading a hidden language.
He reached for the magnifier.
Tilted the brass under the lamp.
"This ain't for doors." Muttered it more to himself than me."Older than that. Hand forged. See these teeth? Containment work. Built to keep something inside."
I leaned in. "Keep what?"
He looked toward the window before he answered.
As if he needed to check if the streets were listening.
"This key belongs to a lock that shouldn't exist anymore.
Every copy was supposed to be destroyed."
"Destroyed by who?"
Swallowed first.
Then barely a whisper.
“The man in the grey suit.”
My pulse slowed the way it does when something finally makes sense and you wish it didn't.
The suit wasn't just wearing secrets. He was burying them.
He slid the key back.
Didn’t want it near him anymore.
"Be careful, Ten. Some doors don't open one way. They open both."
I pocketed it without a word.
Stepped out back in the city that plots.
The night was the same as when I’d walked in.
I wasn’t.
The key wasn’t just history. It was a weapon.
… And someone out there already knew how to use it.
To be continued…

Whom knew? A key. Turns locks, opens ways...or closes them.. not all locks are solid metal, physical things.
Grey Suit. A concept. A thing, something hidden in plain sight....unknown...as in a fog.
